An  appeal  on  behalf  of  the  Dalit  students
I am a writer from Kerala and doing some research in the Tamil Nadu State Archives at Chennai. Recently I chanced to face with a wonderful and pitiable fact regarding to the Dalit students who are conducting their M. Phil research . The unpleasant information I received from one of my co-researchers is that the above students get only Rs. 6000 for a whole year as the scholarship from the State Govt. !  I can’t understand how my co-researcher , who is a young woman coming from a poor Dalit family in the southern- most part of the State and staying in a hostel by paying Rs. 4200 per month as the rent, can complete her course of research . I assume that she leads a day-to-day life of somewhat poverty so as to unable to purchase even some ordinary medicines for her disease. In this situation her helplessness is ascending to its peak when she tries to imagine a small laptop computer to be purchased for the immediate use in her research. (  My friends in this research hall inform me that ,  to  each of the school children in Tamil Nadu the State Govt .  is presenting a Laptop as a gift . )  Here we must receive a bit of information from the other side of the Western Ghats.  Yes, the sisters and brothers of our unlucky girl, the Dalit M. Phil students of Kerala , are getting , as I am hearing from my friends in Kerala , a comparatively huge  amount  equal to 24 times higher than the one she receives, that is Rs. 12,000 per month, from the State Govt.  !
Within the 7 months of my staying in Chennai I could realize that this State is really a “ Land of Charity “ . I am lucky to notice that , from the kind-hearted Chief Minister comes several acts for the benefit of the poor “ Makkal “.  Then , if our beloved “ Amma “ opens her eyes of  charity to this unfortunate  M. Phil students coming from the downtrodden Dalit families , there will not any  opposition in the way of allowing an honest scholarship to them.
